Aspens, Bow Valley Pkwy

A stand of aspen trees near the Muleshoe Picnic area along the Bow Valley Parkway, Banff National Park. Taken in February en route to a fabulous workshop with Darwin Wiggett and Samantha Chrysanthou. I was attracted to the warm, side-lighting and the geometry of the trees. Feedback always appreciated. Large version included.

Me too! As you said, the warm side-lighting and the geometry of the trees are both important here, as well as the geometry of the shadows on the snow. I imagine the tracks in the snow just were not in the right place to use them as a more important element, so you went for the arrangement of trees most strongly lined up on the right. Might be a bit stronger without the tracks, or with the tracks more clearly lined up, leading into the distance, but works well as is.

Interesting Sepia tones, Matthew. the fallen logs act as diagonal lines helping to lead the eye around the image. IMO, the tree trucks look a tad burned and perhaps that was your intention.

The repetition and light here are intriguing., Matthew. The blanket of white offered by the snow makes for a nice simplification to let the trunks really stand out.

Nice light! And nice color contrast with the black and white trunks. Your presentation is good as well and shows beautiful density and uniformity in the trees.

Beautiful lines and light; the fallen aspens add a nice contrast to the verticals. Really very nice.

Excellent! Among all the aspen shots, this is special with the four in front seeming like the lead dancers with a large chorus line behind.

Nice comp and lighting, the tracks on the right are a bit distracting for me but not to bad.
