This owl was captured during daytime on the borders of Lago Grey in Torres del Paine NP, Chile. Because it turned up unexpectedly, it was shot handheld. It was taken with a Canon EOS-1D MkIV and 70-200 f/4 lens in Av, at 1/640 sec, f/7.1, ISO 500, focal length 200 mm, Av and spotmetering. Image was captured in RAW and some basic adjustments were done in Lightroom, Nik Sharpener plugin, such as some contrast enhancement and sharpening. Image was cropped from the original. Best regards, Karin.

I don't understand why you would crop it like this. If you couldn't fit the owl in the frame, why not shoot vertical or zoom out? Otherwise, it looks great to me.

Great shot but I am always turned off to animals cut off at some point of the torso. Nice crispness in you shot.

Wonderful look, pose and background to this. I like that you can see some red on the beak and if you have a vertical of this it would really make a super image, nice job in getting this.

love the pose and great bg, Karin. details look excellent. personally I'd much prefer having the whole bird vs this comp, whether as a horizontal or vertical.

Thanks to all for your viewing and comments, they are much appreciated ! It is a pygmy owl, and it has got very tiny feet underneath its feathers; in fact you can see part of its nail at the bottom of the image. I felt we had to crop this image as the owl landed on the most ugly piece of wood you could imagine. A vertical crop including that wood did nothing really for esthetics. The downside of the crop is that its tail has been left out, which we realize is a drawback and not regarded as optimal from the point of view of bird photographers. So next time we try for the better ! Thanks again, best regards, Karin.
