Being one of those that enjoys old books, I attempted to create a still life that looked back a couple of centuries, envisioning a moment in time when a dreamer paused in his (or her) study of this book and map, perhaps contemplating a journey into the early American wilderness. The warm tone was to give the idea of candlelight. Would appreciate your thoughts on this still life.
4x5, 120mm macro, Provia 100F. Some light fall-off occurred in the upper corners from shifting the lens standard too much.

Large image provided.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, suggestions, ideas, and comments.

This is wonderful Vance and is definitely "old book". Looks like you have a fabulous collection. I still like to read from books (maybe not as old) as opposed to iPads, Kindles, etc. Nice work.

I think this is a wonderful still life Vance. The light even has a feel of being lit by candle light.

Real sweet, Vance. So many still life images look far too staged and awkward, whereas this one has a nice realistic look to it.

Great job of doing the WC, Vance! Appropriate lighting and well composed, diagonally
placing the book. This does have the mood of centuries past. Well concevied and
executed.

I like the idea and composition, as well as the artifacts. I think it is too well lit and from multiple directions as well. For a real candlelight effect, a single narrow light source would add more realism and authenticity to this.

Definitely a cool shot and being somewhat of a book collector I find it very appealing. I agree with Jeffrey's comment regarding the light though. A little darker mood and some soft shadows would improve an already excellent image.

Hard to believe I've never checked out your gallery before....I've always admired your photography. Incredible.....I especially like "Autumn Pond". The serenity is palpable.
I was hoping to see an image you posted a couple years back......a grand scenic of some great light on Matanuska Valley.
