Pronghorn Antelope w/Repost

I ran across these antelope just before sunset in southern Wyoming. I usually shoot landscapes as I tend do better when my subjects don't move around too much, but the light on the snow was so beautiful I decided to give it a shot. Any comments or critiques would be greatly appreciated. Please view larger version.

Scott, very nice image. Have you considered a pan crop? I think it might work well. Thanks for sharing.

John, thank you for your response. I had thought about it to more emphasize the antelope, but I decided to present it as shown because to me this image was as much about the environment as the antelope. I wanted to show the expanse and emptiness of the prairie and how the sky almost blended with the snow. I was also worried that it would be a little 'empty' and not hold a viewers interest if I cropped below the fence.

Hey Scott,

The standard-sized image didn't do too much for me, but when I opened up the larger version I instantly thought "Whoa, this is really nice!" t really love the subtleties of this one - especially how the blue snowy hill in the background just fades into the sky. The white-on-white (blue-on-blue?) detail of the snow field is very nice too. Even the faint fence line adds something here. I personally really like the format you used to present the image (and how you divided the frame and positioned the subject).

My only small nit is that the actual antelope look a tad too cool - I get that they could appear a little blue (because of reflected light), but if this were mine I'd experiment with selectively warming them up just a tad.

But overall I really like this - very nice image to rest my eyes on - thanks for sharing it...

Cheers...

Brad, thank you for your comments. You are absolutely right about the cool light on the antelope, the warm light on the antelopes from the setting sun was a major attraction to me of the scene. I selectively warmed up the antelopes in this version, which may be hard to see at this scale, but does help greatly.

Hey Scott,

Love the re-post - that works even better for me. Now my only regret is not seeing the new version larger!

Great shot - thanks a ton for dropping by this gallery and giving us the privilege of seeing this...

Cheers...

This is how pronghorn usually appear...against a "big" backdrop and I think it is successful as an image, for the reasons you offered in explaining your intent in your response to John. I like this a lot.

Very nice Scott. Indeed this image is as much about the landscape as it is about the pronghorn and therefore I agree with you that in this case a pano crop would be harming the image rather than improve it. Warming up the antelope was a good suggestion by Brad. :toast:

Simple and very compelling. Can't see a difference in the re-post from here, but still a lovely image.
Congrats on the WP!

Hey! Congrats on the Weekly Pick for this beautiful shot. Your experience with landscape images shows in this image. You've been stashing some talent. Time to dust it off and practice?
