Korean Water Deer

A young water deer, I believe, because it doesn't have tusks yet...will most likely start growing out around 6 -7 months old. I shot this at nature reserve here in Seoul this past weekend. Much better conditions than a previous visit back at the end of December.

As you can see, it is standing on the other side of a leafy hill in a fairly shadowy area. I minimized the shadows as much as I could in PSE without diminishing the quality. Saw for a very short time, only enough to get a couple decent shots. Better luck next time!

Canon EOS 60D
Lens: Sigma DG 120-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 APO OS HSM
Focal Length: 400mm
f11
Shutter 1/250
ISO 400
Monopod

Cropped about 60%

Comments and constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Mark, nice shot of the water deer. Too bad about the shadow over its' face, but you seem to have dealt with it well as there is detail in the shadows. It does look alittle soft. I don't have your 120-400 Sigma lens, but I do have the 150-500, and from info I received from postings here on NPN and my own experience my lens works best at F-8. I think you might have been better off using a larger aperture and a higher shutter speed even with the monopod. Thanks for sharing, I am enjoying seeing these Korean animals.

Mark, cool shot of this Korean Water Deer. You've handled the shadow over the face quite well. For me, and as it stands, this adds to the picture because it is characteristics of the dappled light and shadow in this type of cover. I like seeing these Korean animals and noting how they are different from the ones that I see here.

Hi Mark,

Between the dappled/shadowy lighting and underbrush you had some pretty tough conditions to deal with, but handled the situation quite well. I think you could have "tamed" that background down a bit more by opening up on the aperture - f11 seems a tad too closed down to me. I'm thinking that it's busy enough back there that even if you opened up by a stop or two the shot would still have a nice environmental feel to it.

Cheers...thanks for sharing...

Hmmm, you make me really want to see one with tusks! Tough, contrasty light here with that crazy lined background, but you managed to pull of an image where we can appreciate the deer.
