Black-billed Magpie

This is one of a mated pair of magpies that I've been following at their nest site for three years now. The nest is buried in the sagebush perch the bird is taking off from.

7D, 1/1250, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, shot from pickup window on 4/1/11, cropped to 73% of original image then added a strip of canvas on right for composition, global adjustments in ACR, sharpened bird and perch, cloned out 3 tiny twig tips coming into frame at left, natural light, not baited set up or called in

Ron: A superb exposure to handle the details in the very dark parts of the magpie. Wing position is great as is the slight head turn. It all pulls together nicely. For my comfort level, I'd enjoy a bit more room in the frame and even more on the right side. An excellent image, as usual.

This is a superb image, the shape and lines formed by the wings is bang-on.

This is one stunning pocture: pose, composition, exposure, detail, colors. The timing is perfect. I think Black-billed Magpies are beautiful birds and this photo captures that so well.

Great capture Ron. Very sharp where it matters. The blurred wingtips gives a feeling of movement. The bird seems to have been looking right at you. Very impressive considering you were shooting from a pickup window and not a tripod.

Very sweet capture! I don't mind the wing tip blur - it brings my eyes right back to the birds head and implies motion very well.

love the angle and pose of the bird, Ron, as well as the great colors and nice head turn. the eye stands out very nicely, and your exposure looks perfect. it feels just a little tight to me still, I'd think about a little more canvas in front and maybe just a tiny bit more behind too.

Ron,
This reminds me of one of Mia's shots a year or so ago that won a weekly pick. This is just as good or better. You did astoundingly well with the exposure considering you were dealing with blacks and whites. Superb wing position, great detail and a nice head turn towards you makes this just about as good as it gets. :toast:

Really nice Ron. I like all the colors on the bird and the nice sagebush. BG works well too. The slight head turn and catchlight really make this great.

You handled the exposure very well offering details in all parts of the bird. The implied motion from the blurred wings and the iridescent colors adds significantly to the appeal of the image. An outstanding capture Ron, congrats.

Hello Ron

SWEET.... We do Not have these birds in Eastern Canada regularly but have been to Alberta recently over last few years & have really enjoyed watching them, with a thought to sometime attempt to capture their Image. This is as Good as it gets .

So many pleasing parts of this image makes it Very Special. Beautiful head turn & catch light, Full display of the Wings, Detail & Beautiful Tail Feathers, My preference is How you have captured the Wings especially. The Slight Wing movement in Wing Tips gives it Dynamic effect & totally makes the image.

Very Beautiful Capture.

Love the birds plumage so well displayed here in flight Ron, very nice.
Great job on adding the canvas front, a fact of life shooting the smaller birds inflight.
I especially like the POV and metallic colors here.
