I See Red

by Phillip Noll

Gallery: Photo ArtPosted January 21, 2012435 views9 comments
Been playing around with some images trying out new techniques. Most of the leaves were red but a few were yellow so I changed them to red. Also applied some Orton dreaminess to it and various contrast adjustments. Not sure if I have gone too far to pass this off as a nature photo or if it should be considered photo art. Would love to hear your opinions.

Hi Phillip, A little difficult to really judge this image from the small photograph. At first glance, it looks as though you've done a great PP job with the reds and blacks and whites. As I see the small image, it looks like a 'nature' photo as opposed to PA, but I suspect that determination depends on the eye of the viewer. My personal philosophy is that even in the days of film photography, we frequently worked magic when processing, and I think that's true in the digital age too.
Be interesting to see what other folks say.

Cheers,

Carol

I think it depends on a person's definitions of nature photo and photo art. I really like the dreamy feel and the light and colors you have here. It looks really appealing to me.

Whatever it is, I think the end result is nice. I like the bright reds contrasting with the darkish rest of the frame.

Either way it works. The slight Orton effect gives it a very nice feel. Nice work.

Phillip,

First of all, this is a beautiful image. I think the processing is outstanding and I think this comes real close to coming off as quite natural. Although we've seen enough images here and elsewhere that unfortunately taint our responses sometimes. In other words, I would have guessed a slight application of some technique, like Orton, but this certainly is right on the edge of believable. But no matter, it's still a beautiful and well crafted image.

As to the other part of your question. Had you made no disclosures and posted this in Landscape I don't think it would have crossed my mind to move it(can't speak for the other mods of course.) However, by disclosing that you altered the image (changing color) applied some techniques like Orton, that might force the hand. So in the end I'm glad you posted here so I didn't have to make that decision. And personally, I appreciate the disclosure especially on a nature site like NPN. I love the artistry and imagery but believe that there should be some disclosure IF you're presenting something as a straight nature photograph. If you're posting it as Photo Art on DevianArt or somewhere else, no, you should have to disclose. Hope that makes sense.

Art is in the eye of the beholder and I see this one as art. Great pre and post capture. Keep on shooting. :jump:
