Snowy habitat image

The habitat these snowy owls are hanging out in is almost as beautiful as the birds themselves. This was taken after sunset, which is why I used ISO 1000....Those are the Olympic Mtns. in the backround. While I really want a 500MM prime lens, it's nice to be able to back off the zoom quickly for a different compositon. I think the larger version is worth looking at if you have time.

This was my first outing with a 7D and I'm hoping I can get away with a little higher ISO's than with my 40D. I'm also just getting used to processing these larger files, so I hope they look OK.
ISO 1000, 7d, 1-400mm IS @ 160mm, 5/6 @ 1/200 of a second.

A beautiful scene you captured here Dan  I almost moved over to photograph with you that evening, but the cut off log deterred me, after seeing this I wish I would have came over, Sweet Photo!!!

A wonderful shot and good to see the Olympic mts in the background. The larger image looks very nice with good image quality for iso 1000. Nice job getting this shot, well done.

I really love this picture with the mountains in the background and the dried grasses/weeds/log in the foreground. I like how everything is running horizontal (mountains, tree line, log) except for your subject which is vertical. Very peaceful shot. Gorgeous.

Lovely composition, Dan, and I like the sunset colors. The high iso worked well. I like the grasses and the sunset mountains. When I got out there I realized I should have brought a shorter lens as well. I'm sure glad I got my 500 a few years ago-the new model costs twice as much

@Ken...I hear you on the cut log, but this bird was so cooperative! It was nice to just watch the sun go down with this guy and capture all of the different shades of light. What a day that was. :toast: I wish we would have met.

Dennis, I wish I would have met you too. Next time. :wavey:

This is a beauty, Dan. I love the logs and grasses. The trees make a good line and it is capped off by the low light effect on the mountains. Oh, yes, the owl. Great image there, too. I would have made the mistake of cropping in too close, but you have made a much better and more artistic choice. Thanks for making me think.
