Laguna Seca Ranch. Edinburg, TX. January 2012

D3. ISO 1250. 500/4 f 6.3 1/400s. Cloudy day. Gitzo tripod. Wimberly head. From a bird blind. This is an extreme crop. Only about 10% of original image, but still with a lot of detail. I like the crest.

Alan Murphy Workshop.

A nice portrait for all the size of crop. The worst of it is in the mint colored feathers, where the high crop really causes a lot of degradation. The BG is lovely and complementary. There is an area at the top of the beak which has vanished into the BG.

What prevented you from less of a crop?

Love green jays and this is a great portrait. Excellent view of the crest, face, and eye. A little more crop than the image can handle, though.. I think what Dennis meant was along the lines of "why crop so much that parts are soft, when you have (presumably) the whole bird to start with.

It holds up quite well for the crop. I find the brighter spot in the UL a bit distracting, but definitely not a killer.

Let me rephrase: If less of a crop would have netted you more of the bird, what prevented you? Looked at another way, what decided you on a portrait? I am just curious as to what your thought process was.

Sorry, I was being cute ( or maybe not :-). There was another bird behind him.

Great portrait with awesome detail Angela. I really like the soft, brighter tone background that makes this bird really shine.

It's amazing how much detail it has for being cropped so much. It is quite beautiful...almost looks like an airbrush!

Wow, enormous detail indeed for a 10% crop. The colors and exposure makes it art for me (with a big A). Well done, Cheers, Hans

Very cool image, Angela. Every once in awhile when the image quality supports it, I like one of these extreme crops. This one is great. Superb detail and the cloudy day let all the colors come through perfectly.

nice portrait, great colors, but I am distracted by the bright spot on the ULC.

2 people have mentioned "a bright spot" in the ULC. I cannot see it on multiple computers. It's not on the image itself
?something on the web or site itself. Once in a while I have pixelations on other people's images. ?related to that. Sorry you can see something that "isn't really there.
