Well, it's pretty obvious what I've done here to focus the viewer's interest on a single point, no? Rule of thirds composition, throwing the background out of focus, and converting everything except the point of interest to greyscale. Voila...

What do you think? Does it work?

Very nice! I do for some reason think it could be even better if the oof stem was not so close to the subject...maybe if you had moved to either side & shot from a different perspective. Also for some reason I am more interested in the lovely hairy texture rather than the orange petals! Overall, very interesting photo!

Basil, does your processing work? Yes. Only suggestion I would make would be to reduce the intensity of the red-oranges so they still stand out but don't shout quite so loudly. Composition works well.

Good work.

Love the spot of color, it is a wonderful point of interest.

I think that this works very well. I like the composition, the Bg and the partial conversion.

Congrats

Terrific processing that does exactly what you wanted. Very interesting minimalist view as posted. I could also see this a a vertical, but that's a different shot. It would be to small cropped from this version.

This is neat, Basil! The black and white treatment is very appealing - and that splash of color really does draw the eye. I love the details in the folded petals and the little spikes on the pod.
