Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus)

Place: Anthem, AZ
Date: January 8, 2012 8:37 am
Equipment: Nikon D300, Nikkor AF-S 300/2.8, TC20E (2x), G1325, RRS BH-55, Sidekick
Exposure: ISO 400, Aperture priority matrix metered, 1/400th @ f/11
Raw, PS CS3 on Mac G4, 92% of frame (cropped left edge for balance)
No set up, no bait, no blind, no cloning

We used to have Cactus Wrens in our back yard every day, and also at the Water Ranch. But they’ve declined for an unknown reason. So I’m happy when I encounter one like this bird at a community park where I was waiting for a reported rarity to show.

It was windy and around 40 degrees an hour after sunrise but that didn’t phase this wren who allowed me to walk up and take as many shots as I wanted.

Honest critiques requested; all comments appreciated. 1200px version provided as usual for critical viewing.

I sure miss these wrens! Love this image, perfect perch of course, and everything else looks great to my eye. Wouldn't change a thing.

Amazing that they even want to land on the prickly perch but sure makes for cool shots. Nice detail and light and I like your crop.. I just wish for a slight head turn still great as posted.

The desert just wouldn't be the same without these characters. A nice, clean view of the subject, and good depth of field showing off the surrounding cacti. :toast:

I like the low angle on this, amazing the way he is able to perch on the cactus.

Nice image, Rich. There is just something so appealing about any of the wrens. The colors and light are very complimentary here. The perch is great. The comp you have chosen fits well.

Sweet light and sharpness showing all that nice feather detail in the large version. The sky makes a nice BG and the cactus makes a great perch. I really like all the many subtle shades of brown in this little birds plumage. Very beautiful.

Amazing to me how desert birds seem impervious to cactus needles and interesting to read about not seeing them anymore as I see them a lot in the desert behind our place. Excellent detail on the larger image, nice job for almost full frame, way to go.
