The last couple days of December I was able to spend some time photographing this coyote as it searched for carrion along the edge of the frozen Great Salt Lake.

Love the comp of this. The edge of the ice draws you to the coyote and gives a sense of its environment. My favorite part though is the raised paw off the ice. Gives a sense of movement and it's intentions. Well done.

Very, very nice. The paw lifted ever so gingerly off the ice really makes it look slippery and the intense stare on the coyote's face is great. The light is from just the right angle so that the face is lit and also contrasted against the rest of the body.

I like the large DOF here as the background isn't distracting and I think it adds do the scene to be able to see the detail on the ice. The s-curve of the ice is a nice element too. :toast:

I love the intent in the coyote's eyes, so focused and the movement of his paw! The color and shape of the ice is beautiful in it own right. Altogether a great shot!
Wondering if you have ever shot the Farmington Bay eagles. I will be going there in February. I have never been there and wondering if there are particular places that would be better in the morning vs the late afternoon. I am new to wildlife photography and love eagles, so I'm going to take a crack at it. If nothing else I will have spent a wonderful time in the great outdoors. Thanks. Blessings, Deb

Interesting environment. The cool tones of the surrounding ice certainly give this a different look from most coyote shots I've seen. The comp and contour of the ice are great.

John, I really like the environment in this, it is very different from how we normally see them. I agree w/ the others that the one raised paw adds a bit of tension to the image, wondering if the coyote will keep its traction on the ice. Nice work!

Really cool image, John! I love his intense stare! It looks really nice having the blue everywhere, it helps show off the coyote. Huge bonus having the lifted paw! Great comp, too.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I greatly appreciate it.

@Deb - I do shoot at Farmington a good amount, especially in the winter months, and February will be the ideal time to be there for eagles. I have seen a few over the past month or so, and February is almost here! Feel free to email me and I can share more detailed info.

This is a much more handsome individual than those we have around here in NJ. LOVE the environment, and how he's so out in the open. Not at all the typical coyote image. Very memorable. Congrats!!

Very nicely done! The composition is excellent, and I especially like the sweeping curve of the ice as it points toward the coyote and then curves around behind enveloping him. The raised foot is definitely a plus.

One more vote for the icy blue waters, the raised paw, and the intent stare!
