Golden Tuft

Shot this golden clump of grass bathing in early morning light along the Carbon River a couple months ago. Besides the nice light and soft relection on the river in the bg I liked the lines and textures created by the moss and bare rock but couldn't get it all sharp at 260mm. In hindsight probably was a good candidate for a stack. Not sure what the reddish stuff is on the rock, maybe some sort of lichen, I think it's natural though.
Thanks for looking, and best wishes for the New Year to all my friends here on NPN. :toast:

Its a lovely photo, but I do wish the moss in the FG was in focus.

The light on the grass is great and the green moss and rocks complement that very nicely. I think that cropping off the oof foreground would remove a distraction and put more emphasis on the grass as the focal point.

I like the light in this, too. Nice sense of place. I guess I'd prefer the moss in the FG to be in focus, too, but it didn't bother me; I was looking at the grass.

Bruce, This image has a real nice feel. The light is so nice and your comp works really well for me. The combination of moss, rock and that highlighted grass work great together. Like others I would prefer the foreground moss to be in sharper focus if you could have done it, but still very nice.

That a very nice intimate comp and good light. Almost wish for more focus in the foreground.

Bruce,

Count me it for another vote on a sharper foreground. I really like the emphasis of color and focus on the tuft of grass, but with so much of the foreground soft, it actually pulls the eye down and away from your subject. Perhaps even a crop of the foreground would help mitigate that a little. I do like the softness of the background as that really helps isolate the golden grasses.

Basically a great idea, Bruce but I'm with the other ones on the problem of the soft foreground. I guess you wanted to use the shallow DOF to suck the viewer in, but the strong colors and shape of the grass would have done that anyway.

Really nice photo. Love the lighting and colors. DOF is great also. I like that the main point of focus is the yellow grass. Only thing I might try is more of a square or landscape crop.
Beautiful!
