1st Place Winner - Photo Art

Trail Well Traveled

All photos taken at the McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Range in Wy. Most of them taken with Canon 5D, 500mm IS.

Lots of layers and layer masks. My intention was to tell the story of these wonderful wild horses.

Please let me know what you think,
Thanks
Deb

It's wonderful Deb. I think you've managed to tell the "wild horse" story showing the layers of horses on the horse. I like the lighting and I especially like the "knotty" mane indicating the "wear and tear" these horses endure. Nice bg too...nicely done IMO.

Deb, I think you idea to tell a story about the horse is a great idea. I like the mane but the horse's head feels clipped.

I like the graphic nature of the image and think that the main composition helps that nicely. I would sure like to see this large. I think that would help me appreciate all the details in all the layers.

Thanks Beth. I just love the wind knots in the manes of the wild horses.

Thank you for your thoughts on this Carol. I appreciate them. Cropping off part of his head, I feel, helps to accentuate all that is ingrained within his being. The trails he has traveled have been traveled for generations before him. But I will consider this with it less cropped.

Thank you Mark. You can access it here. Click on the image and a larger one will open.

Thanks Denise. It does print really well large on Canvas. It is one that I sell out of a lot at the art shows.

This is an amazing creation Deb! The cropping of parts of the horses head doesn't bother me in the least. In fact, I think it helps illustrate the plight of these animals. Especially with the new legislation regarding the slaughter of wild horses for commercial purposes this treatment hits home....the wild horse is disappearing more and more, bit by bit. The knot in the mane conveys the wild, ungroomed life they lead compared to their pampered, much loved counterparts many people share their lives with. Even the slight or minimal catchlight in the eye (can't tell at this size) depicts how their way of life is in jeopardy. In my opinion this is a highly marketable image and I hope you do something to get this out in the world. This could be a powerful tool for wild horse support groups. Huge congrats on your WP!

Thank you Debbie. That is just what I was after: The thoughts/dreams that are ingrained within him from generations of traveling these same pathways.

Thanks Jim!

Thank you Pam. By cropping parts of his head, it does send the message that these wild horses have no voice themselves in their current plight. I am so glad you understood what I was trying to do with the cropping. WE are their voice! And if we don't stand up for them, they will be completely gone from our American landscape. That would/will be a very sad day......

Very imaginative montage. Love how it works with the bit of background, though I agree I'd love to see more of the horse
s head—either the ears or nose, not necessarily both. Great colors.
