Taken on a gloomy day in November in south Texas. Helped in keeping the whites from being blown out.

Comments/critiques invited, thanks in advance.

Imaged with Nikon D300S, 600mm non VR and 2X TC as best I recall.

Great job keeping the whites toned down! The crop works well for me. What ISO was this shot at? It seems to have a bit of noise although that may just be the web version. Other than that no nits from me!

ISO was 400, 1,000th at f/8, -1/3 EV. Thanks for your comments.

A nice shot. It looks just a little dark to me. Did you shoot this from a boat or from land? Either way based on my experiences you were fortunate to get as close as this even though taken with a 600 and 2X TC.

Thanks for the comments Robert. It was overcast and exposing for the whites surely made the background pretty dark. This was shot on land. It was a family of four whooping cranes, two adults and two probably a year or so old as they had lost the brown markings of very young ones. Of course they would not cooperate and allow me to get a 'family' portrait, always turning away from me. :-)
