Osprey & Fish

Canon EOS 7D
EF400mm f/5.6L USM
12/17/2011 – 10:15:16 AM
1/1250 sec
Shutter priority
f/10
ISO 800 (don't like this setting)
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
Raw, LR3, CS5, 63% of FF

Not the best osprey with fish image I will be able to get, hopefully -- dark fish (not a pretty silvery fish), osprey flying from one feeding spot down to a lower one (so not flying straight or up, both of which would be better), ISO set too high -- but I think it's postable, and it was exciting to get my first osprey with a fish.

Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Barbara,
Nice action and it looks sharp. A lower f-stop of 6.3 or 7.1 would have allowed you to drop your iso and/or increase your shutter speed and you probably didn´t need F10 here. :toast:

I agree. With the 400mm f/7.1 or even 6.3 would have been fine for DOF. Then you could have dropped your ISO down to maybe 500 and still had your SS at or above 1/1000s. Keep at it. An awesome osprey with fish will come soon.

Barbara, I agree with you. I don't like to go above 400 ISO with my 7D either. I like your image and I will take any kind of fish in any Osprey shots I might get. Good job.

Barbara, don't sell yourself short. This is a good image! I wouldn't be unhappy if it were mine. I do agree with Nate about a wider shutter, but I see an image in good focus and stop action. There is a bit of noise in the darker feathers. A very small nit at this size, and would probably disappear in a print. All in all, a class image! :toast:

Nice job with this one, congrats on your first osprey with fish!
Perhaps not the best possible POV or angle, but I definitely agree..It's highly "postable"
Well done & Merry Christmas :wavey:

A solid performance - you are getting a good handle on the camera mechanics for BIF work.

A very good flight shot. I am usually below f7.1 for my flight attempts sometimes even f5.6 so I can get as fast a shutter speed as possible. I like seeing the feather detail under the wing and getting a fish is a real plus, nice job in getting this, way to go.
