Winter's Breath

What's so cool about Yellowstone in the winter is the opportunity to shoot in conditions where 2 temperature extremes interface, with the resultant steam and often interesting lighting. This was taken early morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone NP last February (which tells you how far behind I am processing!)

Canon 5D2. 24-105. ISO 100. f/13. 1/60. C&C appreciated. Please see LARGER VERSION

This is spectacular Doug. I love the rosey hue......I assume that's the effect of the geyser? The fog is awesome. No nits whatsoever. :toast:

Beautiful!!!!! My only possible suggestion would be to perhaps dodge the darker areas along the right edge or do a localized shadows adjustment there.

Looks a bit on the chilly side. I don't think I've ever seen more snow on trees, and with the warm light and nice arrangement you have here it makes for a very interesting and beautiful shot. Very nice work.

Has a nice ethereal look with the steam and the higher values in the snow with minimal shadows. Outstanding.

I saw some documentary stuff on TV about winter in Yellowstone. Unique winters (extremely cold). This is an impressive shot Doug. Love how the trees look like sculptures. And that golden light! :toast:

Thanks all! Good suggestion, Jim! Here, I've selectively brightened the shadows on the right side to keep with the high-key, ethereal look.

Beautiful warm tones. So often shots like this come out blue. I really like the white on white. My only suggestions would be a slight CW rotation. I keep tilting my head because all the trees appear to be leaning to the left! Very nice!!

BTW, you are not far behind in processing. I have tons of images from 1998 to today that I need to process!!

Doug, I admire the warming light counteracting this cold wintry scene. Your repost works especially well for me, a subtle and consistent composition to my eye. Great work in my opinion.

Doug,

Well, the word has already been used, but I'll use it again. Magical! What a gorgeous combination of fog, light and color. Great job on the repost, I think the reduced contrast enhances the atmosphere even more. Both versions are spectacular though. A dream shot.

Doug, very nice scene and lighting. I like the changes you did to the darker trees along the right edge in the repost, but prefer the contrast of the front trees, foreground and LLC pond of the original.
