Creux Du Van

Creux Du Van in October. Early morning is the best time to photograph this amphitheatre-shaped attraction in the western part of Switzerland. I love how the first light hit the limestone wall and made it glow.

Techs: Nikon D700, AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR (@18mm), ISO 200, 5 sec, f14

Thanks for any comments and thoughts

Bill,
I visited this beautiful site for the first time last January, unfortunately it was late afternoon and the light it wasn't good.
Here the light is great as well as the detail. Beautiful work. :toast:

Light on the cliff is beautiful but IMO, the fg rock dominates a bit much. The curving line of the limestone wall is a wonderful element. Makes for a captivating scene

I like the light and curve of the background, but like Nancy, I find the foreground rock a little dominant.

I know this scene well, having photographed it myself a few years back. This suffers from the same problem that mine did: those rocks at the cliff-edge are just too dominant. Lovely light on the far side of the formation, though. The large version is a must-see as so much is lost due to compression in the smaller version.

Did you get to the Gorges de l'Areuse?

Bill, you must have missed my Peeve #11 in the October edition of NPN Online
Actually, the fg rock doesn't bug me too much here, it looks like a nice perch over that bowl. Clone out the contrails in the sky and this will be pretty nice! The light on the distant wall is good. Reminds me of a similar ampitheatre in the Northern California Wilderness--im gonna have to dig through my archives and see if i can find it...

The shapes are nice here and I like the strong foreground interest. Could maybe see burning down the brightness of the foreground rock a bit.

Love the curvvy line of the cliff but I agree with others concerning the fg rocks. Can you get out on these rocks and shoot from there?

Bill,

I really like the soft light being gathered in the ampitheatre. Subtle and great color as well as exposure and general processing. I don't mind the large foreground either. I think it helps tell the story about the the place and it's especially interesting how the rock juts over the edge giving this image a little dynamics. I do like Tony's suggestion though about perhaps dropping the brightness of the rock just a tad. I think that should help things a bit.

Nice job.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback. I will rework it (burn down the brightness of the rock in the foreground)

Great light and composition, with the foreground shape complementing the amphitheater background. I would agree with Nancy, however, that the foreground is a bit too dominant.
