Olympus E-3, 12-60mm at 42mm, handheld
f5.6, 1/250, ISO400

Grytviken, South Georgia Island. This is part of an immense pile of chains and rotted ropes, which were used to hoist whale carcasses up to the flensing platform for processing. More than 2 million whales were processed at Grytviken, through its closure in 1965.

Grytviken strongly affected me, it's a kind of Auschwitz for marine mammals. A sad and terrible place in a gorgeous setting. The chains seemed to me an apt symbol for the place.

Full frame, slight sharpening.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

The back story is everything to this image. Makes it emotionally hard to look at it.

Sad, for sure - but a very compelling image when the story is known.
Congrats on the WP!
