Rough-legged Hawk
by Ron Dudley
It was a cold morning so this bird was pretty "sticky" and let me get close. I think it's a female light phase and I was able to spend a good long time with her.
I'd prefer to loosen up the crop a bit but with the perch becoming more OOF and less appealing at lower left, no more room at top and wanting to avoid a squarish crop this was what I felt was the best option.
7D, 1/1250, f/8, ISO 400, 500 f/4, shot from pickup window on 11/22/11, cropped to 51% of original image, exposure adjustment in ACR, sharpened bird and perch, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not baited, set up or called in

Exceptional BG and detail, and the comp works fine for me.
Excellent!

Very nice capture Ron
Unlike many I really don't have a problem with square crops when they are appropriate for the subject. I think a little more room on the sides would help this and would like to see a version done that way if you were amenable. :-)

In just five months or so, these guys will be back in Alaska. Sigh.
