WC 511 Abandoned Mosque
by Bill Crich
Al-Areesh Mosque in the center of one of three abandoned fishing villages on the NW coast of Qatar. Originally built in the 19th century, the settlements were first abandoned in 1937, resettled in 1945 and then later abandoned for good in the 1970's as the pearling industry declined and the economy became reliant on oil.
Traditional Qatari mosques rest at the heart of the villages and are surrounded by a few old fishermen’s houses. In this village only the minaret survives.
