Fire Birds

It was a windy and cloudy day when I went out to photograph Sandhill Cranes. After the sun set to the west, the light was too dim to photograph birds. So I packed up with disappointment, knowing in my heart there was nothing I shot worth keeping. I looked at west just when I reached parking lot. Oh , my God! The sky at far west was so red that I couldn't believe my eyes. I had less than 5 minutes to setup my tripod and take a couple of shots before the light totally disappeared. Fortunately, there were still a few cranes returning late. The picture here still looks a little "unrealistically" red, even after I reduced red saturation for 25% in LR.

So, lesson for the day: don't leave until you can't see your fingers.

Beautiful, John, and the exact same thing happened to me tonight. I like the positioning of the cranes.

Nice composition and really nice colors. The silhouettes are strong and this really shines in the larger version! I like your lesson for the day! Well done! Sharon
