11-13-11 taken at Bolsa Chica, CA. 8:43 AM

Nikon D-300 f/8 1/1000 IS)-250 280mm -1 step aperture priority

cropped and adjusted in Photoshop

This Brown Pelican flew back and forth up this channel in front of us. This is a few frames before he landed. His landing was so close that he was outside the frame on both sides.

Feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Nice shot of this pelican - starting to come into breeding colours. Nice wing-spread, and really fine detail seen well in the large version. Interesting habitat including the vegetation.
Maybe just a little tight on the left side, but a fine image.

I do agree with Sandy about being too tight on the left side, but regardless it is a very fine brown pelican image. The larger photo must be seen to get the full affect of the image. TFS.

Sandy & John,
I reviewed the original photo and unfortunately, the original shot was tight on the left side. I had many shots in the sequence where the bird was only partially in the frame. I'm getting better getting them in the frame, but am disappointed with many flight shots are not. He landed so close that he was out of the frame on both sides in many shots. I was using a Nikon 200-400 lens with a 1.4 extender at the time.
Thank you both for your thoughtful comments.
Patrick

By cropping on the right, perhaps this helps the tightness on the left seem less noticeable.

Wonderful detail on the pelican and I like the final crop much better. If so inclined you could add some canvas on the left side but nice job in getting this difficult flight shot, way to go.
