Ocean Point Sunset

A slight break from my Scotland images..... Here is one I took Columbus Day Weekend in Boothbay, Maine. Sunset at Ocean Point (my usual sunrise spot but a little up the road to the left). Taken with MY Pentax 67II and 55-100mm, 2-Stop reverse ND, Velvia 50. Unfortunately there were no clouds or fog this evening or for the whole weekend for that matter. Where is the bad weather when you want it?? Just glad I can fool around with film again.

Thanks for having a look. Appreciate your comments and critiques.

Scanned with my Epson flatbed V750 and Silverfast Ai Studio 8 with betterscanning height adjustable holder with ANR glass.

Very clean and crisp Eva. Hope you are enjoying the old steam driven Pentax. It looks very good.

Thanks Ian. I most certainly am enjoying my Pentax. Many thanks again for letting me use your spare 67II on the Hebrides workshop. Just wish I had taken more rolls of film with it while I was there. I certainly like the Pentax 67II better than my old Mamiya 645 which I no longer have and dare I say better than my 5DM2 in several instances.

Digital version with minimal processing in Lightroom (I do not particularly like spending a lot of time processing in PS if I can help it....... taken immediately (at least as fast as I could change cameras on the tripod) after my film version.

Long live film. This is a nice peaceful scene, Eva. The foreground blues work nicely, too.

Ditto on film!!! It renders the sky nicer. I was watching a cooking show last week. I noticed that the flames looked terrible. It was a digital film. I don't like the way digital cameras capture the sun..looks like an atom bomb...Must be something with fire and the sun that plays havoc on the sensor....I still have my 25 year old pentax 6x7 and I think I may use it alot in an upcoming project...Good stuff. Joe.

Great details in the foreground elements, leading me into the composition, Eva. I also like your capture of the sea surface. Excellent exposure and processing to my eye.

This is nice, Eva, withthe nice blue glow on the foreground rocks and the wonderful gradations in the sky. Compared to the digital image, the film seems to provide nicer tonal gradation throughout the image, especially the sky and water. Three huzzahs for film. You seem to be pleased with your V750 which is good to see.

Many thanks Peter. I always appreciate your comments.

Thanks Vance. The biggest difference I have noticed in not only my work, but others, is the smoothness of tonal gradation of film that is not there in digital. I did sell all my old film cameras in the early 2000's but recently bought a Pentax 67II in excellent condition on ebay and a 55-100mm from B&H also in excellent condition and I am pleased with the results I have gotten so far. I do like my Epson V750 but I did need to go to a second source adjustable height holder (betterscanning.com) and ANR glass since the my recent film as processed is not flat and had some crinkles in it (probably a drying problem or due to plastic sleeve they put it in). So I am looking for a better lab. I really like the quality of film though many people today probably don't understand that.

Well ihate to be a party pooper, but honestly this just doesnt grab me the way 99% of your beach scenes do. I like the thirds (big surprise there) and the exposure etc look good, and the simplicity could be a plus, but it seems a bit too simple to me, there doesnt seem to be a strong sense of 'vision' here without a strong focal point. Chalk it up to internet overload

Chalk it up to digital overload Stan. I just wanted to get back to film in the worst way. This maybe not my best (but it was all I had work with this particular evening), but I am glad I got back into film (thanks to Ian). I have 35 years of my film images that are better (tonal range wise) compared to my digital efforts without a lot of PS BS. Composition wise, my newer stuff is probably a lot better. So hopefully I can combine those attributes to get to a better place. I have been going to this place in Boothbay for over 25 yrs, and believe it or not these are the type of images I sell the most of at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation Gallery in Boothbay Harbor, Maine along with images of my sister-in-law's old wooden row boat but don't tell her that though, since she may want a commission!

I'm with Stan on this one, Eva. It's is a nice soothing image, but it does not grab me like most of your other shore work. You've got me expecting something more dramatic.
