Fall foliage in the Tongue River Canyon. Taken two weeks ago on a road trip to the northern end of the Big Horn Mountains. I was lucky enough to be there at the peak of color. Comments appreciated. Thanks for looking

Ah, the backlit fall colors, my favorite way to shoot them. The yellow, blue and green colors look nice in this photo.

Nice autumn colours Nancy and as Richard mentions the backlighting really brings the colours through.

As Richard says: great way of representing fall. I may have tried to focus on the foliage exclusively, because I think the bg does not add so much, but it is not a badly composed image. There is a good balance imo.

Back-lighting is probably the trickiest thing to handle in landscapes--it almost never comes out looking nearly as impressive as it looks in person. I completely agree with Dietrich here, its a real pretty scene, but the bg seems incidental to the main attraction here--for example if i crop so im just looking at the bottom half, it instantly is more interesting to me. Of course, Dietrich and i are looking for the guts of this, probably most folks would prefer this just as it is. What can i tell ya...

This crop focuses on just the foliage. I'm not 100% convinced it's the way I want to go with this but, Hey, I'll try anything. There does seem to be more depth to the foliage, itself in the crop and the vine covered stump is much more prominent. Anyone else have thoughts?

Backlit fall colors are impressive. This is a pretty scene and i really like the colors. I agree that the background doesn't add much to the scene. I would crop the sky so the main focus is more on the foreground

I'm with you Sandy (but then, I am one of those "most folks" that Stan was talking about who love the entire environment so much that cropping is always painful to me  ) I do think that the sky here detracts somewhat from the scene, however, but that may be because it is so saturated and a bit on the cyan/green side. I would not crop nearly as much as your second version, but I might take off the top to the distant tree line, and if you do leave some sky, reduce the cyan saturation. I do really like the darker conifers in the background to show off the brightness of the golden leaves.

Except for the color in the sky which doesn't look natural to me on my monitory,
I like this very much, and I prefer your first posting to the second cropped version.

Wayne makes some good points--there are a number of ways to go with this, i think less cyan in the sky is one possibility, as is a crop to the treeline.
