Mt Rainier - New Snow

Woke up seeing stars out the window. And my impulsive side took over. Decided to try for the third time this month to get an early morning shot of Mt Rainier from Chinook Pass area before they close the roadway for the winter. Fortunately, only six inches of new snow. This was from Naches Peak Loop trail.

Ok, this is close to what I have been trying to shoot. Though I was hoping for some more shrub fall colors poking through.

The original is a photomerge of 21 frames with my Nikon D300 and Zeiss 35 mm. No filters. Probably 50% overlap for each frame...3 rows of 7 frames each. 9600 x 6800 pixels. Downsizing is not too successful. I tried noise reduction and blurring first, then downsizing and sharpening. Not much better. You'll just have to imagine finer details.

Folks, thanks for the comments.

Tom H: Each shot was 1/800 sec shutter and F13. I altered only the focus when shooting the snow in foreground. Once past that row, the focal length was at infinity. I did boost a few raw images individually in CS3 to bring out more detail in fir needles where they were too dark.

Holy smokes that's a large photo! A true beauty of a scene too Ken. I love the fresh snow, especially the heavy cover on the foothills in the distance. Tony's right, add a Season's Greetings to the bottom third and you have a perfect greeting card.

Makes me ready for winter seeing this fresh snow. And as already stated this is definitely holiday card material. I might be tempted to pull back the highlights in the foreground snow a tad where it appears almost washed out. Nice shot.

Ken, That is going to make a wonderful very large image...
Very nicely done...
Question (I am trying to coax the best images possible from my D300s)
when you shot each frame were they all the same exposure, or did you expose for just that part of the merge you captured?
Great shot!!!

I agree with the others Ken, Christmas card material for sure!

The snow just finally melted from the Naches Peak trail, and it's already back again! Gotta love it!

I like the nostalgic feel to this refreshing, bright photo. Nice job scouting out the strong comp, too.

Gorgeous image Ken.....Wow 21 frame stitch...It'll make a beauty of a large print. the clouds at the base of the mountain are really nice. Nice composition too.

FYI- tried to get up the the Summit Lake trailhead yesterday to look for some frosty comps around Coplay Lake but couldn't get there. Ran into sheet ice and the 4-Runner actually started sliding backward a couple of times.
