Brown-Hooded KF

Canon EOS 7D, EF 500mm f/4L IS USM + 1.4x Extender @ 700mm, Aperture Priority @ f/8 (1/1250 sec), -2/3 EV, ISO 400, Beanbag on Car Door, JPEG from RAW, About 60% of Full Frame

Before flying over to South Africa, going by photos I'd seen on the net, I knew there were at least three species of Kingfisher: Giant, Pied, and Malachite. Never got to see a Giant, and only had the fleetest of glances at a Malachite as it zipped over the surface of a pond before disappearing from sight, but at least I had a couple of opportunities with the Pied, albeit in pretty miserable weather conditions.

However, one unexpected bonus was coming across a species I'd never heard of before – a Brown-Hooded Kingfisher – and despite once again some fairly cluttered surroundings, I'm rather pleased with a few frames of the many I fired off, this one being one of those.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of this particular species is not so much it's physical appearance, but the fact that it's usually found quite far from water and apparently has little interest in fish, preferring to eat bugs and insects though I believe it wouldn't turn it's beak up at the odd little frog or lizard ;^)

In a perfect world I'd much prefer if that OOF branch weren't covering part of the subject's body, but if you only knew how many attempts over the course of a few days I'd made at trying to grab a single shot of this little bird with something of a catchlight in it's eye, methinks you too would be willing to overlook that flaw ;^)

Critique and comments are of course always welcome!

The bird stands out nicely from the branches -- with so much in the bird to look at that I had not noticed the branch touching the head until you mentioned it. The beak is the eye-grabber and it takes me right to the gorgeous bird. Congratulations on your find and any time any kind of Kingfisher is in range its a good day

Ashley, I have never seen this species before but I think you did a fine job capturing it! The backround is a little busy and you already mentioned the OOF branch. Despite that you have a good placement in the frame & the bird is very sharp. Good job on this!

Really like the light on the kingfisher Ashley and sharpness looks good as does your composition. I'm not bothered by the busy background but must admit that the OOF foreground branch catches my eye. I'm impressed that you got it as clear as you did though.

Beautiful shot, Ashley! The KF is so clear and sharp, like you must've been right up in its face. The all the branches are a bit distracting and would be nice if they were more oof, but your subject still stands out nice and clear. :toast:

I don't think I've seen this specie of "dry-land" kingfisher before Ashley. Great details and I'm more than willing to overlook that OOF branch
Just look at my post of the roller, with the tail mostly hidden from view. Sometimes it's just not in the cards.
Well done! :toast:

Ashley, another outstanding bird photo IMHO. The sharpness and detail of the bird is great. I do not find the OOF branches distracting, but adding to the habitat the bird lives in. Glad you were able to get this shot and share with us.

Ashley, I really like this image a lot. I love the way the red bill stands out amid the brown tones throughout the rest of the image. In fact, to further emphasize this, I might try to desaturate the greens (except those in the wing, of course) elsewhere in the image. Detail, sharpness, pose are all excellent. I have no objection to the overall setting and find the oof foreground branch only a very small nit.
