Short-eared Owl

This is the same bird as in my post of 8/08/10 but taken 5 frames later. As I've mentioned before in this series, this male would capture a vole, then land on one of two favorite perches close to the nest while he was carrying the vole in his talons. Then just before taking off to deliver the vole to the female and chicks he would transfer the vole from talons to beak. Here he is about to land on the small sagebrush directly beneath him (one of those two "favorite perches").

This isn't as clean a shot as some of the others but I liked his intense focus on the perch and the better look at the habitat. Some may prefer that I clone the two grass stems coming off the top of the head and wing but I deliberately chose to leave them be. I was always fighting for light with these owls in flight and I think I was at the limits of my gear with these birds in this situation.

7D, 1/1000, f/5.6, ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window on 7/25/10 at Red Rock Lakes NWR, cropped to 53% of original image, slight highlight reduction in ACR, sharpened parts of the bird, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not set up, baited or called in

Ron, this is an incredible image. Wish it was mine. I would consider adding more black to the midtones.

Really nice -- owl shots are all about the eyes -- getting both eyes in a head on shot is not easy -- you nailed both, Add the vole and flight shot and the great background -- really nice

Ron, great image. I like the centered composition with more room at the bottom. Looks like this owl is keeping an eye on you. Thanks for posting this image, I really enjoy it.

A KILLER image !!!
Incredible ! I'm not really in a position to suggest any improvements, but somehow feel that if you opt to clone out the grass blade(s), especially over the head, it will further improve.

I like the crop and overall composition that includes seeing more habitat, the look from the owl is great and the vole adds the final touch, way to go Ron, well done with the light that you had.

Outstanding shot, Ron. When I compare it to your 8/08/10 shot it's difficult to choose a favorite. This one, 5 frames later, is at a slightly lower ss (1/1000 s vs 1/1250 s --- were you using exposure bracketing at Aperture priority?) and I think I see a little motion blur in the wings. However, I don't mind it. I prefer how the eyes are directed in this shot. Anyway, it doesn't matter. No need to choose between them. Both are fine, very enjoyable-to-view shots.
