WC506 -Private Waterfall
by Wayne Jones
You would think this lovely waterfall would be something of a tourist attraction, but the owners just call it "our private waterfall" listing the hike to see it as one of the many activities at their sleepy little campground. I think the owners don't want to bother the paying campers with a bunch of tourists, so it's not widely advertized. However, non-camping visitors are allowed on the property for a modest day-use fee.
Other issues may be the steep trail to see it, which requires a lot of wooden stairs down the side of the gorge, and a rather unattractive abandoned mill just to the left of the falls. (Not sure who owns it, but cleaning it up would be an expensive project.) Also, it's in northern New York, not far from the Quebec border. Perhaps it would be a bigger draw if it were not off the beaten path. (The other nearby "sights" are a prison and a cheese factory) There's also competition: a few miles away is a REALLY big free attraction -- the largest forest preserve east of the Mississippi, with 2.5 million acres of public lands and waters.

12 commentsAs for the photo - it's wonderful. I love the flow lines you've captured in the water... an excellent choice for your shutter speed. And you've handled a difficult range of light very well. The glow on the water in the foreground is really nice, and the rich colors really stand out. Beautifully done!
