Bird Silhouette

OK, for my once in a blue moon avian post, I would like to present this silhouette, and I would like to ask for an ID. I was out shooting landscape abstracts and this little fella kept swimming through them, so I shot it (with camera

). I have no idea what it is though - I'm doing good to know it's a bird! Anyway, this is a landscapist's version of an avian image.

I've included a non-silhouetted version to help with the ID.

Love the color of the water and the bird is nicely placed in the frame. Looks like a grebe buy I'll leave id to an expert.

My guess is that the bird is a Common Loon. I like the placement of the bird on both horizontal and vertical thirds -- makes for an interesting composition

I agree: winter plumage common loon. How it rides in the water plus the heavy bill say loon. Neck has the band that will turn into the necklace in breeding plumage. - Peter
