We were at the zoo yesterday. I "had" to get a photo of this beautiful cat. Since this is a zoo photo, the background was a nondescript cage. So, I decided to frame it. IMO this would just be any old photo ...without the frame

A beautiful Jaguar indeed Lucy! Having taken so many previous shots of felines in captivity myself, I totally empathise with your situation here. While of course any evidence of a cage is somewhat distracting when it comes to pictures of animals or birds, I do think your choice to frame it like this was a good one. If this were mine though, I think I would have graduated or feathered (not sure of the correct term!) the inner edges of the white circle, stretching out the fade toward the centre, as I feel the cut-off here is a little too harsh. Hope the way I worded that makes some sense to you ;^)

Your choice of the "heavy" dark frame and the obvious wire mesh made for a strong emotional reaction, Lucy. Very effective choice to convey the message of captivity.

I like your choice of heavy frame and vignetting here, Lucy! Agree with Ashley Vincent about softening the vignette.

I find this a very confusing image with a dark frame, then light triangles in the corners, a circle and then the diamond like fence behind the spotted jaguar, plus the dark square behind its head.

Yes Lon...I wanted the intense beauty of the cat contrasted with his captivity. That's, also, why I didn't feather the white oval. IMO It would have made the transition too soft.
