This is just as I found it in Starved Rock State Park, Illinois in February of 2009. If anyone knows what bird this is from I'd like to hear.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Yellow Hammer? I think they are called flickers by some folks. They were once called Yellow-shafted flickers. Maybe will be again. Bird namers have a tough time making up their mind. I am having a bit of trouble getting a drop on this one. The bright corner and the bright out of focus area compete with the subject. But it kind of seems like an eye is peering out of the background. It is kind of surprising to find a fallen feather this vertical and I guess that is good. I wonder how this would look with an aperture of f2.8?

Thanks for your comment, Robert. Yellow-shafted flickers are certainly common at this location. Hadn't thought about that. As for the vertical orientation, this was along a very popular trail to a frozen waterfall, so someone else could easily have found this and stuck it in this way.
