This is one of my favorite raptors because of it's beautiful plumage when it flies. This was taken recently during our trip to Argentina, this bird had just taken off from it's fencepost. The light was fading so I had to use a lower shutter speed and F-stop than I would prefer on a flight shot but I think it worked out well. Cropped to about 60% of FF.

Very beautiful bird! Nice pose, comp, and the rain streaks and soft mist are exellent.

Excellent image under these conditions, hat's off to ya Nate.
Nice contrast & natural color, it would've been tempting to up it here.
Great technique to pull it off so well :toast:

Excellent job getting this shot in these conditions, Nate. What an awesome looking hawk with that cinnamon color in it's wings. Nice wing position and nice eye contact. The rain and mist really add to the image. Great job.

A beautiful shot of the raptor. I agree with Howard on the contrast, but this probably better represents the conditions.

I too really like these hawks. I observed this species for the first time in the Pantanal, and was thrilled. Your comp here is amazing. I really like the detail, the wing pose and the rain. Great effect!!!

That is one pretty raptor Nate. I can see why it is one of your favorites. I like the rainy conditions. Very different. Nice sharpness for the SS and f you had to use. Well done.

Nate, I love the atmosphere with mist & rain. Work of art as well as Nature - could even call it a masterpiece.

The larger version shows how well it did work out. Beautifully sharp for those conditions.

Amazing capture Nate and nicely composed! The raindrops really enhance and visually explain the setting and conditions. Not sure if it would be much of an improvement, but if this were mine I think I'd be tempted to slightly darken the Hawk to make it pop just a little more, even though in reality the tones looked exactly as you have them here.

Wow! That's pretty awesome! It looks like you have pretty good detail considering the low light. I really like the rain drops and the foggy feel.

Great job getting this shot under the conditions Nate and I see why this is one of your favorite species...looks beautiful to me as well. My only nit is the color looks flat to me. I understand the conditions and why, but think I still would bump it up in PS if it were mine. I think it would just make this stand out more because it should since it is such a nice shot.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

In my opinion the colors in the larger version are realistic, in fact I did increase the contrast a little bit from the raw file but I wanted the image to be consistent with the rainy, dark conditions. I still think the bird pops well and anymore contrast would change the mood of the shot too much imo.

I can see why you would like this raptors, in some ways the color scheme reminds me of a harris's hawk. Nice job in getting this flight shot in the rain, way to go.
