Coral Mushroom
by David Thomas
This is a followup on the beautiful B&W image posted by Wick Smith 8/9/11.
Following hurricane/tropical storm Irene, we had hundreds of these corals in a wooded area about the size of a small house footprint. I've never seen anything like it in our part of the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. This one grew out of the forest floor, up against a dead tree branch and next to a leaf that surely came down in the heavy rains. Natural light, with occasional fleeting sunlight through the trees. Too much light washed out the colors, which varied from quite pale to this shade of salmon. By the way, these are edible, and my sister-in-law sauteed a batch for us, deliciously blended into risotto (but never take risks -- she knows mushrooms well).
Canon 7D, 90mm f/2.8 macro at f/10, 1/60th, ISO 500, tripod. (Should have increased the f-stop for more depth of field.)
Thanks for looking, Dave Thomas, Leesburg, Virginia
