Windblown

These grasses were found on a pond in Denali NP, in the huge expanse of tundra / taiga in the shadow of the Denali massif near Wonder Lake. When I made this image a number of years ago, I was so intent on focusing on the ground glass under the dark cloth that I didn't realize a caribou had ambled up right behind me. I heard someone laughing, pulled the cloth off and turned around to be greeted by a young caribou literally a foot away. Some folks across the pond had watched the whole thing and told me later they thought the caribou was going to nose me into the pond. Guess the caribou was wondering what this funny looking 5 legged creature was along his watering hole. What is sort of spooky is that a bear could have been there instead of a caribou. Taught me to pay a lot more attention to my surroundings.
4x5, 210mm, Velvia, warm polarizer. M1 scan, Tony Kuyper's masks.

Large image provided to see a bit more detail.

Very nice lines! Like the green. Don't know why, but when I looked at the tiny thumbnail I told myself --- it's got to be Velvia.

Just amazing! I love looking at this Vance. Your composition is wonderful in my view. I love the different greens, red and yellow against the dark background. Well, I'm glad it was a caribou instead of a browm bear. I know that feeling of getting so intent in the photograph that you loose your surroundings for a bit, and I'm usually very aware of my surroundings too. With you even more so because you are under the hood. Really excellent work Vance!

This is gorgeous Vance. Beautiful contrast and light. Wonderful story too. Thank God it was not a bear and the caribou decided not to push you in the pond! Any little sound always spooks me when I go into grizzly country out west. Magnificent work.

This is so cool, Vance. I simply love all the graceful curves and lines created by the fallen grasses. I had the same thing happen to me once in Shenandoah, NP although it was a deer instead of an caribou. I was so intent on photographing the sunset that I did not notice the doe standing right behind me until I turned around after the light show was over.

There's a real Zen to this, Vance. It actually speaks quite well to sense of losing one's self to the moment.

This is beautiful, Vance. The lines and curves work very well together, and the dark water adds very nice negative space.

Good job! :toast:

Vance,

A beautiful image and a great story to go along with it. I love the vibrant, striking green against the deep, rich black here. Simple, intimate, just wonderful. Can't think of any nits or suggestions.

Love it! The black sets such a wonderful stage for those green patterns. I would love to find a pond with this kind of stuff floating in it!
