Composition query

I would really like to hear feedback on this composition. I would never normally cut the abdomen or wings off a dragonfly or damselfly image but in this case I wanted to get a bit closer to reveal the colours and detail. Does it work? I'm in 2 minds and have stared at it for so long I've lost my judgement.

I also have shots where I've got the whole insect in frame (there's one on my blog).

Canon 7D with Sigma 150, f11, 1/20, ISO 200, cable release etc. Full frame.

I think a composition like this works as long as it looks as though you have made a deliberate choice to cut parts of the animal's body off. In this case it does, and therefore it works for me. Great background as well.

I think it works and it is a clever composition, using corners to led into the important areas of the scene, but i prefer seeing the whole thing but thats personal. :toast:

If the abdomen had been bisecting the LR corner the comp would have been perfect, IMHO. With subjects like this, if you want to home in on the detail you have to make a compromise on what to leave out, a purely subjective decision, in many ways, as you can't please everyone, so you might as well please yourself.

A very pleasing 2D image, with some nice detail and beautiful colours.

Works for me, Matt. I think Phil has hit the nail on the the head re the composition, the key parts work well in the corners.

I think this works well - the composition, colours, and bg are great. :toast: :toast: Agree that if the abdomen had bisected the BRH corner would have improved it even more
