Sugar Land, TX August 24, 2011

D3 ISO 1000. 300/2.8 with 2x tc. f5.6 1/640 -0.7 ev. From car window.

I've been chasing these birds all summer. I think this is a juvenile. There is another, and an adult. I saw and imaged 2 kites with prey yesterday.

Really nice shot! Great pose and eye, especially. They are very elusive, and I've yet to get a decent shot here.
The juveniles have a lot of rust colour on the breast and head, and I believe it lasts thru the first year so this probably is not a juvenile from this year.

very cool, Angela--nice pose and the prey is a big plus. seems perhaps just a little dark?

definitely not a first year bird--you can see that it has replaced it's inner primaries and the outer ones are older with one or two growing in--juvenile raptors don't molt their flight feathers until they're a year old.

These are awesome birds Angela. I like the comp and pose of the bird. Looks sharp with good detail. I agree, maybe just a bit too dark.

Great to get this bird with a mouse, it's wings stretched and beak open, the lighting wasn't ideal on the face but not much you could do about that, sweet image Angela :toast:

Thanks for feedback about the adult status. I checked and this was 4 minutes before sunset. A little dark I agree, but as it was.
