Northern Harrier

The male harrier I've been working for several winters appeared back in his territory this past week. I spent some time the past two mornings and got some nice images.

1D MkII, 500mm f4 IS, ISO 320, evaluative (-.7), 1/4000, f7.1, ~75% full frame.

The position of the bird is great, but the head area looks quite oversharpened (or something) to me.

At first I thought so too. So I looked again at the original. Here is a 100% pixel crop of the head (unsharpened). There's a shadow fringe around the bottom and that may be what you're seeing.

Exceptionally good, Bob. Nice addition to your wonderful portfolio. Just curious - did you use a Wimberly head for this?

Bill, I use a Wimberley Sidekick set up just like in this article.
