I shot this female Black-chinned Hummingbird at 5:38am (22 minutes after sunrise) on July 2. I liked the warm light. I did do a minor clone of some vegetation at the right edge of the frame.

I appreciate your comments and critiques. Please view the larger version if possible.

Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x TC, tripod, camo cloth. not baited, natural perch and light.

f/6.3, 1/640, ISO 500

Crop to 54% (9.7 of 18MP)

Gorgeous light and perch, Brian. What's the bg-sandstone?

Very cool composition and colors. The hint of green on the hummer is a pleasant surprise. Well done.

Dennis, I'm not certain what the bg was, but it was some combination or variation of Kaibab limestone (top layer of Grand Canyon rock) and mixed pinyon-juniper and desertscrub--small shrubs ranging from brown to greenish... in this case it looks like the limestone or maybe a juniper trunk catching the light just right.

Brian: This is certainly a unique image with the overall color balance. The pose and position of the hummer are nice. I like your composition. The warm light feels a bit overwhelming to me. While this may have been what it looked like, it still feels overwhelming as it dominates the feel of the image for me.

Very cool shot Brian, the detail on the hummer is great in the larger version and I like the overall composition, that is some amazing light, I go back and forth on how the light impacts the image. I can understand what Keith is saying but on the other hand it is nice to see something different. Nice job in getting this, excellent hummer detail.

Love the composition, but I have to be honest and agree with Keith on the warm light.
