Took a hike up the Sabrina Basin to Hungry Packer a couple days ago to check things out for a future bp. Really cool area with lots to explore! I took the photo gear in hopes of getting some nice late afternoon lighting. I hope to do a fall wknd bp to explore the area more throughly than a day hike allows!

Some of my favorite lighting in the ES occurs during late afternoon/early evening as the sun hangs low in the sky, raking across the sierra.

I toned this in PS using one of the duo tone preset colors, black and warm gray then adjusted the curves to taste.

The tonality of the shot is very well adjusted IMHO. The textures of the rocks and trees compliment the conversion. I like it.

Nice image of Picture Peak and I really like the tones. I backpacked in this area the last two summers with my daughter and it's a beautiful location. We camped at Blue Lake, Midnight Lake and Hungry Packer. We also hiked up to Moonlight Lake and, even in late August, the wildflowers were amazing at 11,000 feet.

I have camped up at Baboon, over the ridge from Hungry Packer. Great area and this is a fine take. B&W works well. Wish you would have posted a bigger version, so I could further enjoy the detail.

thanks for leaving a comment guys!

@Rudy: sounds like you hit up most of the lakes and had a good time. the flowers were probably near peak last weekend. there were shooting stars and the lupin I saw still had the tips yet to bloom.
@Harley: I haven't been to Baboon yet, though I might go there next. I'll try and provide a link to a larger image.

Cory,

Contrast and clarity are excellent in the b&w rendition. Comp works well except you're missing that quarter moon out there in that empty sky! ;-) Excellent processing and every post I see from you I keep remembering those stunning b&w's you did from Yosemite after that workshop you did. Great work.

Cory, I gather that the peak is pretty high given the trees in front of it, which give some idea of size. I like your post processing and the textures in the image.

I have always loved this mountain, Cory! You did a nice job on the conversion. You might drop the values of the shadows just a bit for different look.

I once hiked up to Hungry Packer for a day hike. Man, that made for a long day. I can't quite recall the distance from Sabrina to the lake, but 7 miles comes to mind. Is that correct?

Cory, Babboon Lakes are real pretty. They tend to more protected from the wind, and, being right below the Thompson Ridge, the views are outstanding. If you do go there, continue south (up-valley) to Sunset Lake below Mount Thompson. It's an inpiring place, and very Alpine.

That is better, Cory. Thanks

Photo opps at Baboon are best at the far end of the lake for evening light. The far ridge can really light up.

This one goes back to my early days with a 4x5.

@Jay: thanks for leaving a comment! Picture Pk is about 13,100' and the area I was shooting from was about 11,000'
@Preston: ya, it's a bit of a walk, about 7.2mi in to HP but was definitely worth it; just better for a backpack. Thanks for the heads-up about Baboon. I'm thinking of going there and sunset tomorrow for a day hike. never been there and wanted to check it out.

@Harley: great shot and thanks for the tip!
