I took this shot of this splendid bird when on holiday in Botswana-taken in the early morning with the early rays of the sun.

Canon 1D Mk 4 with 300mm 2.8l & 1.4 TC Hand Held
f4 1/800 100 ISO

No modifications Full Frame.

I would welcome CC please.

Thanks
Ian

I'm not sure what size you've posted here Ian, but a full size 1200px version would be preferable for critique as at this size, there is no way of telling if the image is sharp, or how much detail there is.

First impression is that I would loose the dark shape to the lower right of the trunk.

Secondly, I would have composed the shot with the bird slightly higher in the frame and placing it more to the left thus giving it some space to look into. You will create the same effect if you now crop the image, but personally, I'd rather get comp right in camera than rely on cropping......

HTH's.

Cropping to move the bird off-centre and to the left will definitely improve the image in my opinion.

Good advice from Graham. A larger size will help a lot with critique, but first of all get the subject off centre!

Hi Ian. I would echo exactly what Graham & Phil have said. In addition I would look to bring out a little more detail in the birds back feathers. Also In terms of a crop I would crop it in such a way that you cannot see any sky to the left of the trunk. So start your bottom left corner at the bottom left edge of the trunk. This will cut out the dark area that Graham reffered to and it will also position the bird on the left hand thirds line.

Botswana is a special place especially the Okavango and the Chobe River. Where was the picture taken? Where you camping?
