Female Broad Tailed

I did some multi flash hummingbird photography this weekend up near Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Texas Red Yucca flower in this image is a flower that our New Mexico hummers naturally pollinate.

Full Frame
Canon 50D, 100-400 @ 235mm
ISO 250
1/250 @ f/18
4 Canon 430 EXII Flashes (3 on the hummer, 1 on the background)

NR applied to the background.

Larger Version shows much more detail for this image.

Lovely composition, Keith: flower and bird are perfectly matched within the frame (and it's a full frame at that!). Neat how the bg highlights each subject too. My only nit is that it seems to me that the colors of the bird should be a little more saturated and brighter especially with so much flash power to capture the iridescence. However, I note in a previous comment from you that you prefer a lower degree of saturation. So, I expect that it's just a matter of taste. Beautiful image.

The thumbnail sure does not do this justice - wonderful detail and colours on the large version.
The yucca is neat, but I'd experiment with cloning out about half of it to concentrate on this lovely hummer. The bottom half is the least attractive part anyway.
Really nice!

Wonderfull shot ! I do feel a little tighter crop might accentuate the bird a little. No big deal . Would do me !

A lovely image as is. Faint purple/magenta hues in the background are a perfect match for the Yucca flower.

I admire the absolute stop to the wings that your method provides. The long crop is nice and other crops would be effective in emphasizing different elements. I'd wager you fooled around with various compositions.

Keith, I really like this as is...no nits here. Great work! Just out of curiosity, how long did you have to sit before having this opportunity?

Very nice. The flowers really put it out of the park. Large version looks super nice.

The place I was photographing is truly amazing. There were probably somewhere around 400-500 hummingbirds. Getting one on the flower with a nice wing position (which of course you can't see while photographing) was the bigger challenge. I photographed for about 5 hours that morning, walked away with 400+ images, edited it down to about 170 in LightRoom and picked a small handful that I'll work on. Hope that helps frame the experience and how long it took to get this opportunity.

Sweeeeet One Keith  Multi-flash hummingbird photography is tricky, but once you get all the bugs worked out, beauties like this one are the reward.

Outstanding all the way around. I really like how the wings are back to show the body of the hummer. Very nice background colors that compliment the image. Wonderful hummer image Keith, the larger version was a pleasure to view and interesting to read your post of being around 400-500 hummers! Amazing.

He is so cute! I like the flowers and how you caught him with his beak right in one of the flowers. I haven't tried using flash on my bird pictures yet but my dad has told me about doing that. Your hummingbird pictures make me want to find some to photograph!
