Whale Meat Again

Sorry about the title, I pinched it from a Jim Capaldi (drummer and lyricist with Traffic) album.

Whilst in Svalbard we were lucky to find a naturally dead Whale carcass which was a great draw to the Polar Bears in the area. This is "Minnie" an orphan bear standing on the carcass, taken 12th September 2009.

So happy for the bears. I don't know how long a carcass stays "good" in freezing weather, but I hope it lasted them a good long while. In the larger image you can see the great detail and light and perfect exposure you have here.

This is a striking image Ken, but not exactly a wallhanger:wink: . I particularly like the detail of the forefeet sinking into the soft whale. Exposure is spot-on, the detail excellent and the tongue out a bonus, making it more clear that it is feeding. The only small improvement here IMO would have been a bit less DOF, or rather a more blurred BG.

Hi Ken,

While I think I preferred the "dynamism" of your previous shot a little more than this one, I still quite like this. I hate to sound like a broken record, but my thoughts on the image are virtually identical to Vincents - my only small nit is I wish the background was just a tad softer (or even a lot softer, but I know this wouldn't have been possible). My only caveat to this is that I wouldn't want to give up much of the foreground detail to accomplish this.

Purely out of curiosity, do you happen to know what kind of whale this was? Those bands look a little like those found on the "extensible" throat of a Humpback (but I haven't seen the inside surface of too many whales so I may be WAY off!).

Cheers...

Brad

Sorry for the delay in responding, just got to the UK to earn some money for my next safari.

It certainly is not a wallhanger, a little too "gruesome" it dis not smell that good either!

No idea as to what the whale is sorry about that.

Regarding the BG I'll take a look when I get back, I am sure it could be softened slightly.

Thanks for another great polar bear shot (I love these bears). Look at the purple tongue!
