Cute little unknown

I haven't the slightest idea of the name of this tiny wildflower. I especially liked the fluted red and green base of the bloom. Someone may know the correct name for the flower and it would be interesting to know the proper term for that red and green cup or base of the bloom.

Charlie, I can't help with the ID, but the capture is really well done in my opinion. I like the composition, background control and light. Well done.

No help with the ID.

For my tastes, the comp here is unusually good Charlie. Good separation, light and supporting bg as well. No suggestions.

Wonderful capture of a beautiful flower! Nice DOF and detail. There appears to be some very interesting light on the plant but seems rather muted here. Perhaps you could make that light "pop" a bit more with some curves work? Great shot! :toast:

Thanks, Phillip. I have never used "curves" and will look into what it does. Keep the suggestions comming NPN. You will pull me out of the past yet.

Wonderful sharp image, Charlie. As for ID, it looks like winecup clarkia AKA purple clarkia (Clarkia purpurea). Of the many hundreds of images on the Internet of this species, yours is one of the best. Well done!

Thanks David. I do believe you nailed it on the ID. I must begin to observe all that can be noted of the entire plant, when fist seeing it, as bloom alone is seldom enough (at least for me) to correctly ID wildflowers. So often I photograph a flower and a significant time later when processing the image I then try to think of what the stem, leaves, etc, looked like. Too late then.

I like the composition and your lighting. Hard to judge the size of the subject. At f/22 looks like you got as much DOF as possible, although I'd like a touch more for the flower.

Great composition, it really shows off the growth pattern of the flower well.

David is da man when it comes to fixing those tough IDs  - glad you have that sorted out. A very fine portrait of the Clarkia flower - the petal formation mirrors Sweet Williams. I have no suggestions (not that I am capable of doling them out anyway) and I think this is a photo that should be in a Floral text book.
