It hasn't been much of a year for macro photography for me, far too many days with a stiff breeze. However, I did go out this morning and came across this little guy. I think it is some sort of hover fly, but I have never seen anything quite like it. Does anybody have any ideas what it could be? This is the one shot I got before it flew off.

Apparently it is Tachina grossa, sometimes known as the giant tachanid fly. This fly is parasitic and lays its eggs on moths, especially oak eggar. Many thanks to Brett Lewis for the information.

Hi David

A striking image well captured in a stiff breeze.
