Original title (before repost): Rocky Mountain Colors
I was shooting the wildflowers on Shrine Ridge last week, when a brief shower passed overhead and i turned to the one other photographer there and said "if the sun gets a bit lower we might get a good rainbow" Sure enough, a short while later this rainbow appeared to the east!
5Dmkii; 70-300; 2 exp blend for focus at f/20

wow... nice composition and cool rainbow, stan.

i do like the sharpness you have here, but i think you lose a little depth with your focus stack. the tall pines (especially) and the hill look almost superimposed.

I know what you are saying Navin, but that has nothing to do with the focal blend cause the blend is only affecting the bottom 1/4 of the image. This was a tough shot to present because of the real high contrast--i really reduced the sharpening here for web, but compression was still a problem. All i can say in my defense is it looks a lot better at a bigger size. Im open to suggestions...Thanks!

A beautiful shot, Stan. Love the glow light on the landscape and the feast of beautiful color. The rain and rainbow really make this.

A very appealing composition for me, Stan. I enjoy the way the colors of the flowers and the rainbow counteract each other.

Stan,

Too bad you didn't get this intense of a bow' at the garden. However nice little story but what a outstanding image. All of the elements came together to make this "Sing" . Wonderfully colorful foreground and the shadows making the bands relate it so well to the rainbow in the sky. Makes me wish I was there, because it is so special to be at the right place at the right time to capture nature showing off.

I love this, Stan! The colors are incredible and you have some very special light. To be really picky, I might have liked to see the left hand tree included fully. But this is really excellent as is!

Beautiful scene and wonderful colors! Well...this is what you can do with a rainbow when you get time to work, Stan. I like this alot. This looks like it could be a page in a picture storybook. Excellent work Stan. :toast:

I don't think that's being picky Christoph, and i agree! I shot a wide angle version (link on RMNP) but ideally i would have shot this at 50mm, this was at the low end of my zoom at 70mm.
Thanks Nick & y'all!

Terrific shot! The edge-to-edge sharpness is great. I find this version more compelling than your post in the weekly challenge gallery although both are top quality.

You caught the whole shibang here Stan! Love the color mix that ties the rainbow and flowers together. You say the larger version has more detail, but with this version it looks like you may have blown out the red channel on the paintbrush. My guess is that you didn't, so it would be cool to see a larger version.

Stan,

Timing is everything and you sure nailed this one. Just a glorious scene. It's one thing to have such a display of wildflowers (love the paintbrush!) but to get this together with the rainbow is just amazing. Great image!

My only suggestion is a slight burn down of the LLC. Nothing wrong technically, just a thought for any future workings of this image.

Awesome.

Killer flower shot Stan. And the dramatic sky and rainbow are icing on the cake!

The only nit I have is that the flowers seem a bit oversaturated. But I'm guessing it's the web presentation. I'll bet this looks killer large!

Nice shot Stan! What a serendipitous moment. The visible rain showers add quite a bit of drama to the shot as well.

This is just sick! Beautiful shot, Stan! Must have been awesome to witness in person! The light is a bit harsh, especially on the flowers in the LLC. Perhaps drop the brightness a tad? The only other thing I would suggest is to back off on the red saturation a bit as the paintbrush seem to be oversaturated. Minor nits for sure though. This is really gorgeous! :toast:

Aside from the magical light and rainbow, I really like the shadows across the foreground of flowers and the rain streaks in the sky. Absolutely beautiful!
In my view, the superimposed look that Navin mentioned comes from a fore/midground that's just a wee bit too bright. Even if this is what you saw, I think that a darker fore/midground would get rid of that slight disconnect and just plain look better.

*EDIT* Phil and I were typing at the same time, so that's two of us.

I like how the colors of the rainbow are repeated in the color on the landscape. You handled the contrasty light well. Well seen and captured.

I hate to mess too much with this cause the histogram is already way left and the reds aren't close to clipped, but based on comments I:
1) reduced the red saturation
2) darkened the fg a bit
3) resharpened as minimally as possible.
Better?

I think it's a bit better. I like the desaturated reds, which Canon sensors are notorious for doing even if they don't appear clipped in the data. Still a bit bright, IMO. Screw the histogram...trust your eyes.

Both versions are nice Stan, quite the display of paintbrush. A small nit would be the tree on the left being cut off, perhaps there were other trees there as well. This is very nice as is though. The rainbow is icing on the cake. :toast:

Thanks, Bill--John's right tho, the 5Ds do mess with the reds!
I should note that Andreas is right, the shadows were 'harsh' here, and i liked that cause it gave it a striped look that mimicked the rainbow. I had about 20 exp or so, and some were even more 'harsh' than this. Im not crazy about how it looks in the compressed image, fortunately its not an issue in the tif.

Wow, great scene, Stan. Repost is slightly better, but the comp here transcends the technicals, so it doesn't matter all that much.

I'm with Tony here. This is so good, and unusual, that any minor technical weakness is overpowered by the grandeur of the image as a whole. So unusual to get a nice comp and great image in what would be harsh light for most other situations. Awesome!
