This is the female from a nest near my home. She is gripping a tiny sunfish that is only visible in one of the first frames in the sequence.

Nikon D300; Sigma 500/4.5; f6.3@ 1/1600th; ISO 320; HH from a boat; 80%FF.

All comments and suggestions most welcome.

The image is technically well executed. Great detail on head, feet, and feathers on back of wing. Compositionally the bird being perfectly in profile is not the best angle to show off this size and majesty of the subject. The effect is amplified by the darker portions of the wings disappearing into the dark BG.

Well done on the detail. The BG and side on profile are unfortunate. The large image shows this much better.

This is a GREAT image, Tom. Excellent detail and sharpness. I know it is much harder to get this image against this background that when they are in the sky and I applaud your accomplishment.

Thanks for the comments.

I do find it much more difficult to track a bird against a BG like this than against an open sky.

I agree that parts of the bird get lost against the BG in this case, but haven't matched the detail in open-air shots.

Bill: this was taken with my Nikon 300/4.

Thanks for looking!
