Small in the frame

I don't usually post photos with the subject this small in the frame, but I like the comp, light and bg here, and think that despite the small size there's enough detail in the larger version to be interesting. I'm interested to hear what others think about this female Black-chinned Hummingbird.

I appreciate your critiques and comments. Please view the larger version if possible.

Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x TC, tripod, camo cloth

f/7.1, 1/640, ISO 400

Crop to 60% of original (10.8 of 18MP)

Natural perch, not baited.

Incredible colors - nice job getting close to this tiny bird and the DOF looks perfect

I like this a lot, Brian. As you say, in the larger image, there's plenty of detail. The pose and palette make this image for me.

Beatifull light, like the comp and the sharpness of the bird against the soft branch/trunk. Cute bird! Maybe could clone out the bottom branch??

Wonderful light and tonality to this. The hummer has some nice detail in the larger image. I like the iridescent green all along the back side, catch light in the eye and beak looks sharp. I might experiment with the crop to move the entire tree trunk into the frame and take some off the right. I can see why you like this, very cool shot Brian, way to go.

I like the comp and the bird is plenty big enough to show nice detail, Brian. I like the color of the sky. The yellow color cast over the whole image is o.k. However, I bet we'd see a lot more color in bird and perch if the color cast was removed from them. They would contrast with the sky more too.

The light is wonderful and the details on the hummingbird are great on the large version. I really like the colors of this scene, nice work.

I like this nearly monochromatic color scheme, sharp details too Brian.
I'd probably cut out that that bottom branch, primarily because its "cut" status.
It does tend to draw ones eye a bit..
Nice work! :toast:

very nice color contrast between the BG and the olive green of the bird feathers. pleasing comp. size (big or small) matters for these birds...
