Gladiola

I've been waiting patiently for this Gladiola to bloom for a few weeks now. This morning when I checked it was about as close to what I had pictured in my mind as it would get.

Pentax K-7; f/29, 10.0 sec, ISO-100; Tamron 90mm macro.

Thanks for looking, C&C appreciated.

Derek:
This is one flower which I have not attempted because I do not know how to comp them. You have done brilliantly here. Yellow with the black bg works perfectly. I like the image as posted. Just curious about the patchy softness in the image - at F29, one would expect everything to be in focus unless there is some motion blur during the long exposure.

Thanks Gary! I'd never attempted this one either, but I got a little inspiration from a shot in Harold Feinsteins book 100 Flowers.
The softness is from a slight amount of Orton I applied to soften it up a little. f/29 provided good DOF, but it looked a little industrial...

Harold's book is inspiring! Many of his images in 100 flowers are made with a scanner. You may like to experiment with a scanner if you are interested in his style.

Superb comp and the image has real magic in it Derek. Beautiful flowing color.

I started scanning because I wanted to try and duplicate Feinstein's style. I think you've certainly succeeded here without a scanner. Very fine processing Derek, at least for my tastes.

I agree that Glads are not easy to compose. This smooth golden yellow Glad against the black BG works well and is about as good a Glad as I've seen.

Derek, Like the lighting and the soft feel to this Glad photo  . I also like being able to see the stigma in all 4 blooms - some nice angle chosen there.

My Glads are waiting to show any signs of buds even. I have about 10 plants waiting to bloom.

Makes me want to try a gladiola again, Derek - I find them so difficult ! I think it's the softness that appeals most - the flowers melting into each other in a very beautiful composition. Really well done !!
