Late Summer Falls

This is the same waterfall as in my previous post later the same year, and from a slightly different angle.

This is a rework because I was never happy with the tones and color of the water, especially where the falling water hits the pool. A bit of tweaking, using TK's masks, gave a better rendition in the print.

Tachihara 4x5
Astia 100-F
Lens: Not recorded, but probably my 90mm Nikor.

Your thoughts are always appreciated!

The light here is really nice, Preston. There are some obviously sunlit areas but they aren't blown out and seem to be very much the same tone as the shadows. This makes for a very viewable image where the contrasting colors can be appreciated without having to see through the usual tonal contrast. I like this scene quite well. Certainly some nice framing of the falls with the rocks and enough little details, like plants and rock cracks, to add interest.

The vertical composition makes this work very well. I like the texture in the rocks in contrast to the smooth water. Very nice image

Preston,

This is a nice counterpoint image to the original post, as a companion it's very nice. The waterfall and pool which you weren't happy with before is the very best part of this image. To bring the rest up to that standard is probably going to be pretty difficult. This is for the best and trying to pull anymore out of the surrounding scene is going to ruin it rather than improve it. It's enough.

This area always brings back great memories. I stopped there on my very first trip with a LF camera, well over a decade ago. I should scan some of those early images. I remember how exciting it was.

Anyway... I love it, Preston. Water and granite make for such a wonderful combination.

Very nice intimate scene, I like the quaility of the light on the rocks and the little patches of green scattered thourghout the frame.

Really nice little scene, PB. I like the late light and it is a very peaceful, serene setting.

Im enjoying these intimate little scenes of yours Preston. Nice work and framing. The subtle creeping of light adds a great secondary dimension to the shot.

Well done

Comparing the two images creates an interesting study in how a stream changes with the time of the year. I like this version considerably better and I think that the lighting and how you've handled it plays a major role in that feeling. I also really like those "stepping stone" boulders leading into the frame.

Preston, as a thumbnail this is understated. As an enlargement I'm sure stated very well. I almost overlooked it but am glad I didn't! Something appealing about its simplicity and the granite surroundings. :toast:

I do wonder if the crop could be pulled in very slightly from the right side (just a hair) for an even more balanced feel? I'm not sure about this though...

The cool tones and details are simply fantastic, and the subtle lighting throughout this scene is perfect. A truely beautiful image, Preston. :toast:

Hi Preston - the warm light on the granite is just beautiful. I also like how the boulders frame the scene so nicely. This seems like the perfect place to just sit and enjoy a quiet afternoon.

The tones look pretty good to me. I like the sunlight hitting some parts of the bottom half of the frame. There is a nice rhythm from the bottom rocks up to the falls. My only compliant is the dark cave in the LRC. The diagonal kinda takes me out of the frame.

A beautiful rocky waterfall scene, Preston. Love the warm light hitting the rocks and the small shrub on the left. I also like the soft contrast and quiet mood the image imparts.

Thanks for you comments, everyone.

The sunlight was very soft at the end of the day. I wanted to get another exposure, but the light left the foreground rocks and the plant on the left; the imapct was gone.
